2023 MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament

We are excited to once again host the the 2023 MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament, the state of Minnesota's premier high school wrestling invitational. The 2023 MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament will host 40 teams from across the Midwest, and will be held under 64-man consolation bracket format wrestling out to 12 places, allowing for each wrestler to have a guaranteed four matches on the weekend.

Back for 2023, the MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament will be held at the Mayo Civic Center, allowing for the tournament to expand from eight mats to 12 mats of tournament action. Eight of the competition mats will be placed in the arena, while the remaining four mats will be held in the auditorium.

The MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament is a fundraiser event hosted by the Gopher Wrestling Club, with proceeds directly supporting GWC athletes. Founded in 1977, the Gopher Wrestling Club (GWC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that exists to promote and support the sport of wrestling and its athletes both in Minnesota and the United States by creating a world-class training environment for athletes to pursue their World and Olympic aspirations.

2023 MatBoss Christmas Tournament Information

Weight Allowance: 

One-pound allowance on Friday (team competing on Thursday), two-pound allowance on Saturday. 

Roster/Seeding: 

Seeding will be based on criteria through TrackWrestling. Head coaches will receive an emailed link to the TrackWrestling tournament page on Tuesday, December 5. Rosters and criteria information must be entered by Sunday, December 10 at 10:00 p.m. Bracket sheets will be generated on Tuesday, December 12 for coaches' review.  Any additional criteria or changes need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday, December 13.

Tournament Format: 

The tournament format this year will be 64-man brackets with wrestle-backs to third place. Each bracket will have 12 place winners. All wrestlers who go 0-2 and 1-2 will be placed into subsequent consolation brackets for day two to guarantee a minimum of four matches for each wrestler (assuming brackets are full). There will be 12 competition mats, with eight mats in the arena and four mats in the auditorium. On-Deck and In The Hole monitors will be available in both competition areas. Awards will be presented to the top six placers at the mats on the final day of competition.

Friday, December 15th. 2023

9:00 a.m. - Mayo Civic Center building opens

10:00 a.m. - Weigh-Ins (Auditorium)

11:00 a.m. - Gates open for spectators

12:00 p.m - SESSION I (Through Round of 16)

4:30 p.m. - Break

5:30 p.m. - SESSION II (wrestle up to Consolation Quarterfinals)

 

Saturday, December 16th. 2023

7:00 a.m. - Mayo Civic Center building opens

8:00 a.m. - Weigh-Ins (Auditorium)

9:00 a.m. - Gates open for spectators

10:00 a.m - SESSION III (Through 7th, 9th, 11th Place Matches)

5:00 p.m. - Break

6:00 p.m. - SESSION IV: Finals (1st, 3rd, 5th)

Team Information/Notes:

Each team is allowed 13 wrestlers (per MSHSL weight classes - 107, 114, 121, 127, 133, 139, 145, 152, 160, 172, 189, 215, 285), three coaches, and three managers, with additional wristbands will be available for purchase for $10/each. There will be two coaches and one manager allowed in the corner per match. Teams will be allowed to bring in food and coolers, and coaches will be welcome to the hospitality room for food as well. Brackets will be updated live on TrackWrestling, and matches will be streamed on FloWrestling.
